About the role

This is a rare opportunity to join our Palliative Care team as a Consultant/Senior Medical Officer - Palliative Care Physician, providing cover during a long leave period.

You will be working primarily at Wellington Regional Hospital with outreach to Kenepuru Hospital, and will provide specialist medical care to patients and whānau with complex palliative needs. The role combines direct clinical care, expert symptom management, consultation across specialties, and collaborative practice with nursing, allied health, and community partners.

You'll manage a varied inpatient caseload, provide senior medical advice to clinicians across the hospital, support complex clinical decision-making, and work closely with hospice and primary care teams to ensure seamless transitions for patients between care settings.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Hospital Palliative Care Service is a highly skilled multidisciplinary team based at Wellington Regional Hospital, with outreach to Kenepuru Hospital. The team consists of SMOs, CNSs, RMO and NP colleagues. We work closely with hospital teams, primary care, community providers, and hospices to ensure equitable, patient-centred palliative care. Our service sees over 1000 new patients each year, spanning both malignant and non-malignant conditions.

Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley district is located centrally in Wellington and has over 6,000 full-time equivalent staff, making us one of the major employers in the Wellington region. We operate three hospitals ' Wellington Regional Hospital in Newtown, Hutt Valley Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua ' as well as the Kāpiti Health Centre at Paraparaumu.

About you

• Vocationally registered in Internal Medicine (Palliative Medicine) with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ)
• FRACP or equivalent qualification and be able to register for vocational registration with the MCNZ
• Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary team
• Broad experience in hospital and/or hospice-based palliative care
