About us

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is the national agency for place-based heritage in Aotearoa. We celebrate, research, care for, and assist communities to recognise and protect these places for the benefit of future generations.

For nearly fifty years our Māori Built Heritage Team has been working with whānau, marae, hapū, and iwi to identify, protect and conserve our taonga places. We have a part-time role available that will see you providing advice on some of the most significant taonga in Aotearoa – our historic marae across the country. If the conservation and restoration of our heritage marae buildings is the kind of work that you value, we want to hear from you.

 

About the role

This permanent part-time role reports to the Kaiwhakatere Tautiaki Taonga/ Manager Māori Built Heritage under the leadership of the Director Kaiwhakahaere Tautiaki Taonga me Kaupapa Māori and Kaihautū.

Your focus will be supporting the delivery of a programme that provides expert conservation advice, and develops wānanga and workshops in the context of the traditional arts of our marae, and Māori architecture, including wharenui, pouhaki, pātaka, whare karakia and more.

Your skills and expertise could be from a hands-on taonga or architectural conservation background, or a museum and heritage context.

 

About you

Your knowledge and experience that will see you succeed in this role:

  • Ability to articulate a Māori world view and apply it to the work of Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
  • Your ability to advance and promote Māori values and principles in a heritage context, and heritage values in a kaupapa Māori context.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Experience working with, and developing and maintaining networks and relationships with marae, hapū, and iwi.
  • Knowledge and understanding of mātauranga, tikanga and te ao Māori, and a keen appreciation of local circumstances.
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field.

 

The salary range for the position is $70,585 – $83,041 depending on skills and experience.
