About the Role

We are seeking a Cardiologist or a General Medicine Physician with a subspecialty in Cardiology to join our team on a fixed-term basis to support planned leave. You will be joining a collegial Department of Medicine comprising Consultant Physicians with strong subspecialty interests, delivering both inpatient and outpatient care.

Our cardiology service provides:

  • Echocardiography
  • Exercise treadmill testing
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography
  • Ambulatory cardiac monitoring
  • A diagnostic angiography laboratory

Our regionally integrated cardiac network allows those with interventional skills to undertake procedures at other regional centres. Monthly cardiology clinics in Hāwera form part of this role (frequency negotiable).

About You

You will hold (or be eligible for) vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand and bring:

  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Strong teamwork, communication and leadership skills
  • Commitment to high-quality patient-centred care
  • A proactive, collaborative and improvement-focused mindset
  • Competence in temporary pacing wires and pericardial drains.

You will participate in:

  • Cardiology service delivery (inpatient and outpatient)
  • Teaching of basic and advanced trainees, medical students, nursing, and allied health staff
  • Continued professional development, audit and service improvement

Desirable:

  • Experience in cardiac imaging (echocardiography, cardiac CT and/or cardiac MRI)

Our Service & Region

Taranaki Base Hospital is a modern secondary hospital with strong clinical support services including Intensivists, Interventional Radiology, and diagnostic imaging. You will be supported by:

  • Cardiologists (in house and locum)
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • Cardiac Sonographers and Physiologists
  • Cardiology outpatient nursing and support staff

We also maintain close links with Waikato Hospital for interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and cardiothoracic surgery. We also are supported by Auckland City Hospital for Adult Congenital Heart Disease.
