Specialist Medical Officer Sleep Medicine, Respiratory Service at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Counties Manukau, Auckland

         Permanent Full (or Part) Time

         Remunerations per ASMS SECA $185,380 - $267,980 + CME

Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand Counties Manukau serves a large multi-cultural population.  We are in the beautiful coastal South Auckland where cultural diversity is our middle name.

Middlemore Hospital is an accredited, 800-bed, teaching hospital linked with the University of Auckland. Many new facilities have been developed recently and include new inpatient wards, HDU, ICU and endoscopy suites. Counties Manukau has a friendly, caring atmosphere and a strong culture of quality care and education.

We are looking for a Sleep trained physician to join our respiratory team to help support the delivery of sleep and home ventilation care to our people.  You will be involved in reporting a full range of sleep investigations, service planning and development, and quality improvement initiatives. The role includes assessing and managing patients in the outpatient and inpatient setting, as well as providing oversight and supervision of both registrar and nurse/physiologist clinics.

About the Role

The appointee will join existing respiratory physicians and be part of a larger Medicine Department providing services to a population of around 600,000 people. Middlemore Hospital has a specialist respiratory ward. The respiratory medical team consists of 16 Respiratory Physicians, 4 Registrars, a Sleep Fellow, and a Research Fellow. The respiratory team is multi-disciplinary consisting of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists, Health Psychologist, and Physiologists.  We have a cohesive team that will provide a very supportive and stimulating environment for a new or experienced physician. You will participate in sleep clinics, with general respiratory clinics, bronchoscopy and ward work all available depending on the applicant. About the Team/Service/ Location

The respiratory medical team consists of 16 Respiratory Physicians, 4 Registrars, a Sleep Fellow, and a Research Fellow. The respiratory team is multi-disciplinary consisting of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists, Health Psychologist, and Physiologists.  We have a cohesive team that will provide a very supportive and stimulating environment for a new or experienced physician.

Respiratory services include sleep and oxygen services, pulmonary rehabilitation, acute and chronic non-invasive ventilation, bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, fully equipped lung function laboratories, and a regional lung cancer service. We have an interventional bronchoscopy service (stents, valves), and an endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) service. The department is also active in research and has interests in a variety of areas including asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, lung cancer and pleural diseases.

About you

         You will have a qualification that entitles the applicant to vocational registration as a physician by the NZ Medical Council as well as advanced training in respiratory and sleep medicine

         Experience working in a respiratory service

         Demonstrated ability to manage respiratory and sleep conditions and to report sleep investigations.

         Demonstrated commitment to continuing education

         A sound level of insight into own strengths and weaknesses and is committed to self- improvement

         Focus on improving own efficiency, and monitoring own performance to identify areas for improvement

         Ability to ensure that all aspects of solutions and judgements are well thought through and are supported by solid evidence

         Committed to cultural awareness and its application in practice
