About the Role

We are seeking a Medical Oncologist to join our progressive Cancer and Blood Service in Te Tai Tokerau, Northland to provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with cancer, working within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care.

In the past year, the New Zealand Government has increased funding in the medicines budget by over $600 million over four years, for publicly funded provision of 33 new cancer and 33 new non-cancer medicines. It is estimated that 92,240 patients across the country will access these medicines in the first year.

This was accompanied by new funding for Health NZ to ensure the increased capacity to deliver these medicines is in place and care can be distributed into communities and rural settings. This is a brilliant opportunity to provide care closer to where people live.

Cancer and Blood services are provided across two sites at Te Tai Tokerau Whangārei based Jim Carney Centre (where the roles will be predominantly based) and additional clinics at Bay of Islands hospital in Kawakawa. Our service is growing due to newly funded medicines, and these roles will support expanded services and provision of care to additional rural centres.

About the Location

Whangārei Hospital is the largest hospital in Te Tai Tokerau providing secondary care services, supported by three regional/rural hospitals in Kaitaia, Kawakawa and Dargaville. The Cancer and Blood department provides a comprehensive Oncology outpatient service across Te Tai Tokerau. Whilst pre-dominantly based at the Whangārei Hospital, you will have frequent opportunities to travel and work in the rural areas of Northland.

About you

Applicants for this position must be Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in Medical Oncology or equivalent and hold, or be eligible for, vocational registration with the New Zealand Medical Council. Applicants must also have demonstrated clinical skills and the ability to work effectively within our multi-disciplinary teams.
