Te Puni Kōkiri leads policy advice to the Government on Māori development, and Iwi and Māori relations with the Crown. To do this effectively we must position ourselves to elevate our monitoring and mentoring responsibilities and our responsibility to promote increases in the levels of achievement for Māori.
Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity
Join Te Puni Kōkiri’s Public Sector Monitoring team and help shape strategic influence across government. We monitor and advise on the adequacy of public services for Māori, Treaty Settlements, and Whānau Ora, using evidence-based frameworks and insights to drive better outcomes.
As a Principal Advisor, you’ll provide strategic oversight and thought leadership on complex issues, lead the design and implementation of robust monitoring frameworks, ensure data integrity, enable transparent reporting to hold agencies accountable for delivering shared outcomes for Māori, and build strong relationships with central agencies and Post Settlement Governance Entities. You’ll deliver influential advice to senior leaders and Ministers, mentor staff, and contribute to key work programmes that strengthen public sector performance for Māori.

Mōu | About You
We’re looking for someone with:
- Deep knowledge of government systems and policy analysis
- Experience in policy writing, leading and providing strategic policy advice to the ELT
- Experience writing to the Ministers, focussing on the strategic outcomes for the Ministry and the Minister.
- Expertise in performance monitoring and strategic leadership
- Proven ability to influence at senior levels and manage complex relationships
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience working with Māori communities
The likely appointment range is $123,317 (90%) - $137,018 (100%), depending on skills and experience. The full range of the grade is $123,317 - $164,423
This is a unique opportunity to work with Māori data to influence policy decision making across the public sector to achieve better outcomes for Māori.
