Payroll Team Leader at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke's Bay, Hawkes Bay

About the Role

As our Payroll Team Leader, youll oversee the endtoend delivery of payroll services for Health NZ staff, ensuring every employee is paid accurately, on time, and in line with legislation, employment agreements, and organisational policy. Youll provide daytoday leadership to the payroll team, supporting their development, setting goals, and promoting crossskilling to strengthen capability across the service.

In this busy and rewarding role, youll be the goto expert for escalated payroll queries, work closely with system administrators to maintain accurate configuration and data, and continually review processes to drive efficiency and best practice. Your work will directly support a positive employee experience across the organisation by ensuring payroll processes are seamless, reliable, and customerfocused.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Youll be part of the Payroll team within Health New Zealands corporate services, based at Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The team works collaboratively with HR, Recruitment, Finance, Clinical Managers, and external organisations such as ACC, Audit NZ, payroll vendors, and other district payroll services.

About you

As a Payroll Team Leader, you will bring:

  • A relevant finance, business, or payroll qualification
  • Significant payroll and leadership experience (ideally 710 years) and experience working within large, complex organisations
  • Strong understanding of payroll legislation, including the Holidays Act, PAYE, and multiagreement environments
  • Advanced problemsolving skills and confidence handling escalated or complex queries
  • Excellent communication and relationshipbuilding skills
  • Proficiency with payroll systems and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • A collaborative, positive, and solutionsfocused leadership style
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity, and culturally safe practice
