Registered Nurse - Outpatient Department at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Hutt Valley, Lower Hutt

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Registered Nurse to join our busy Pre-assessment team within the Outpatient Department. This role is part of a supportive multi-disciplinary team working in a dynamic clinic environment.

Pre-assessment plays a vital role in ensuring patients are safe, optimised, and fully prepared for theatre. Our team undertakes comprehensive clinical assessments, reviews medications and co-morbidities, coordinates required diagnostics, and provides education so patients feel informed and supported throughout their surgical journey. Pre-assessment is a people-focused service, delivering personalised, high-quality care across the lifespan.

You will need to demonstrate the ability to build strong rapport with patients, clinicians, and colleagues to ensure high-quality outcomes. We are seeking a Registered Nurse who is committed to a long-term role and eager to further develop their skills and knowledge. You will be well supported by experienced health professionals within our multi-disciplinary team. The salary range for this role is NZNO Nursing MECA $75,773 - $106,739.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Outpatients is a diverse and dynamic service covering a wide range of specialties, including Gynaecology, Surgical, Medical, Pre-assessment, ENT, Eyes, and Orthopaedics. Our teams manage a high volume of patients across these specialties, providing coordinated and patient-centred care every day.

We are a happy, supportive, and experienced group of nurses, administrators, and clinicians who work closely together to achieve the best possible outcomes for our people and their families. Collaboration sits at the heart of what we do'whether we are preparing patients for theatre, supporting specialist clinics, or coordinating care with wider services.

About you

You will be an experienced Registered Nurse working within the New Zealand healthcare setting, bringing a solid clinical knowledge base and a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care.

You will demonstrate:

  • A strong foundation of nursing knowledge, supported by sound clinical reasoning.
  • Excellent communication skills'over the phone, in person, and in written form'to ensure clear, compassionate, and professional interactions.
  • The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, valuing each member's contribution to patient care.
  • Clear, compassionate communication with patients, whānau, and colleagues'particularly in high-pressure or fast-changing situations.
  • Respect for diverse backgrounds and a commitment to providing equitable, culturally safe and responsive care.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where priorities may shift quickly.
  • A caring and reassuring approach that supports patients and their whānau throughout their healthcare journey.
  • Precision in clinical documentation, assessment, and follow-up to ensure safe and effective care.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to respond confidently and appropriately to clinical challenges.
  • The capacity to manage stress, maintain professionalism, and support colleagues during busy or challenging periods.
  • A willingness to remain current with best practice guidelines, new technologies, and evolving models of care.
