Analyst - Public Finance & Value for Money at The Treasury, Wellington

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Have you got what it takes to shape Aotearoa New Zealand's tomorrow?

We are looking for vibrant, passionate public servants wanting to try something new in their career. We have an exciting role available in a team focused on improving the public service and the financial system that underpins it. Build experience in an area and in an institution that will remain invaluable to you throughout your career. If you came to the end of 2025 and are thinking about your next steps, then reach out for a coffee (even if the role doesn’t quite sound like you at first blush!).

Mō mātou | About Us

At The Treasury Te Tai Ōhanga we're creating a better future for New Zealand and everyone who calls our amazing country home. We're the Government's economic and financial advisor, working hard to raise the standard of living for everyone in Aotearoa, now and in the future.

Our talented people bring their diverse backgrounds and experiences to tackling New Zealand's biggest and most inter-connected issues. Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow. We provide you with a rich and supported learning environment to gain the skills you need in your role.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role

The Public Finance and Value for Money team is a newly established team in Treasury with an exciting work programme ahead of it. The team has responsibility for the rules and settings, and for developing tools, that help support good long-term management of the government’s finances. We are not looking for a subject matter expert; we are looking for a passionate, curious and pragmatic thinker. You’ll be supported in a caring and collaborative team environment, advancing your skills and career, while shaping a better tomorrow for all New Zealanders.

The available analyst role will have the opportunity to work across topics that the team focuses on, including public sector performance, budgeting systems and public sector pay. This is a great opportunity to understand public finance through a system lens. In this role you will work with a range of key internal and external stakeholders, operating with trust and autonomy.

Ō pūmanawa | About You

This important work takes a special kind of person with a passion for making a difference and getting things done. We are committed to employing people from a wide range of academic, cultural and social backgrounds and experiences.

We're looking for someone with at least 18 months' public sector policy experience (or equivalent) at Analyst level who wants to take a step up in their career, within a supportive and friendly team environment.

You must be passionate about the public service and have a drive to make a difference.  The key thing we are looking for – in addition to the strong base in critical thinking that all policy work requires – is a “people person”. You will bring strong soft skills, particularly communication, relationship skills, and the ability to manage your time and tasks.

Ko ngā hua | What We Offer

This is an important job and that's why we'll do all we can to support your success. Flexible work arrangements and five weeks annual leave, along with a range of other health and wellbeing initiatives, will help you to enjoy a positive work/life balance. Our numerous social events, sports teams and employee networks will enable you to connect and have fun.

The wharenui, at the heart of our workplace, embodies our commitment to diversity and making this an inclusive place that will welcome the unique experiences and perspectives you bring to our collaborative team culture.

We'll prioritise your development, offering you opportunities to train and advance your chosen career. The work will stimulate and challenge you, helping you learn, grow and build valuable experience and skills.
