About the Team

On 1 July 2024, Maritime NZ's existing Health & Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) designation extended to include work at New Zealand's 13 major ports.

The HSWA Regulatory Operations team has been established as part of the Safer Ports Programme (SPP) to enable Maritime NZ to achieve excellence in delivering its functions as a designated HSWA regulator. The team play a critical role leading Maritime NZ's strategy for regulating ports and harbours, engaging with port and industry stakeholders, and driving a significant uplift in the health and safety performance of the maritime and port sectors.

About the role:

Reporting to the Manager HSWA Regulatory Operations, the HSWA Specialists are responsible for leading the delivery of complex health and safety compliance monitoring activities. Key activities include:

  • Leading engagement with external stakeholders, including industry and port organisations, and user groups, and building and maintaining relationships with senior leaders to improve HSWA regulatory outcomes
  • Applying HSWA expertise to carry out complex regulatory operations and interventions including assessing PCBU health and safety management systems to drive improvements in health and safety management practices
  • Playing a key role in building HSWA capability across Maritime NZ frontline teams through coaching and mentoring staff and facilitating learning and development, including on-the-job learning opportunities
  • Supporting the Manager HSWA Inspections with planning and leading HSWA regulatory work programmes, including working with harm prevention programme leads ensure cohesive delivery that achieves harm prevention goals
  • Maintaining a collaborative approach across Maritime NZ, and providing specialist HSWA and/or port expertise to support the work of others

What we're looking for:

We are seeking candidates with proven experience applying the Health and Safety at Work Act in a regulatory context, with advanced knowledge of risk management practices and health and safety systems. Ideally, you will have port industry knowledge or equivalent experience working in high-risk industrial environments with a strong harm prevention focus. The role requires strong relationship management and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively share subject matter expertise with peers and staff. Candidates must be able to travel on a regular basis.

The HSWA Specialist role is to be located in Auckland  The role is permanent, full-time (37.5 hours) with an appointing range of $140,735 - $171,946, depending on skills and experience. Please note you must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand to be considered.
