Join a regional specialist service delivering expert eating disorder care across the South Island.

The South Island Eating Disorders Service (SIEDS) is a regional specialist service based at Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch. SIEDS provides specialist outpatient assessment and treatment for people aged 12'65 across Canterbury, alongside inpatient beds serving the wider South Island. The service also provides training, consultation, liaison, and clinical support to clinicians treating eating disorders throughout the South Island.

About the Role

As a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist within SIEDS, you will work in a varied and rewarding role across both inpatient and outpatient settings, providing specialist assessment and management of moderate to severe eating disorders for patients ages 12 to 18 years old.   

Your work will include:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric and medical risk assessment
  • Development of psychological formulations
  • Psychiatric management within multidisciplinary treatment frameworks (including Family Based Treatment contexts where appropriate)
  • Management of complex comorbidities such as depression, anxiety, OCD, and self-harm/suicidality

You will be part of a longstanding and passionate specialist team and contribute to regional leadership in eating disorder care, including providing consultation, liaison, and clinical support to other clinicians across the South Island.

About the Team / Service / Location

The South Island Eating Disorders Service (SIEDS) is based at Hillmorton Hospital, the hub for Specialist Mental Health Services in Waitaha Canterbury. SIEDS operates as a regional tertiary service, supporting local services while delivering specialist outpatient care in Canterbury and inpatient treatment for the South Island.

The multidisciplinary team includes psychiatrists, psychologists, dietitians, nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists working collaboratively to provide evidence-informed, recovery-focused, and whānau-inclusive care.

About You

To practice as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in New Zealand, you must obtain Vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). This requires Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), including an Advanced Certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, or a comparable international qualification. 

  • Experience in the assessment and management of eating disorders (advantageous)
  • Experience managing moderate to severe mental health presentations and associated comorbidities
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
  • Commitment to working collaboratively with whānau and supporting youth and adult populations
  • Demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and bicultural practice
  • Prior experience within specialist eating disorder services (outpatient, inpatient, or consult liaison) and familiarity with New Zealand eating disorder service frameworks would be desirable.
