Senior Advisor at Ministry of Health, Wellington

Ko tōu ake mahi - What you'll do

The Public Health Agency leads all public health and population health policy, strategy, regulatory, intelligence, surveillance and monitoring functions, and has a key role in advising Ministers on all public health matters.

On a day-to-day basis, you will build and maintain collaborative relationships across the Ministry and Health entities, other agencies and also with international partners. You will prepare policy briefings for Ministers and senior leaders representing New Zealand internationally to advance our interests, as well as providing timely strategic advice on a wide range of global health matters.

Unique opportunity to advance New Zealand's global health objectives, bringing your international experience and policy, coordination and briefing skills into a small team doing interesting mahi.
  • Support our health leaders as they engage with their international counterparts, the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other international bodies
  • Contribute to our global health work programme, coordinating with experts and NZ agencies (including Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade) to achieve our objectives

Ko ngā pūkenga ōu - What you'll bring

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or equivalent experience
  • Expertise and experience working on policy and advisory projects and/or programmes of work
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multilateral or foreign policy environment, particularly managing policy products, briefings, events and international engagements
  • Proven organisational skills with the ability to think ahead, use initiative, establish priorities and meet deadlines whilst preserving high levels of accuracy and confidentiality
  • Previous experience in applying critical thinking and using sound judgement to develop options and provide advice
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to tailor complex messages to a range of audiences, including diverse nationalities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster good stakeholder relationships and operate in a culturally responsive manner
  • Knowledge of the machinery of Government, risk management, managing at the political interface
