Community Mental Health Nurse - Court Liaison - Tauranga based at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Waikato, Waikato

About the Role

We are seeking a dynamic registered nurse to join our Forensic Court Liaison team.

Delivering excellent care in a culturally responsive manner, to support the best outcomes for Māori is fundamental to our mahi.

The primary role of the Forensic Court Liaison Nurse is to be responsive to the needs of people referred to the service, who may have mental health, addiction, cognitive and intellectual disability issues. The Forensic Court Liaison Nurse will be required to facilitate timely assessments and interventions for those who are referred to their service. In some cases the Forensic Court Liaison Nurse will facilitate diversion from the criminal justice system into the health sector.

Key responsibilities:

  • Build relationships with tāngata whaiora , whanau and support agencies.
  • Conduct thorough mental health and risk assessments of tāngata whaiora in court.
  • Provide feedback of assessments to the judiciary.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for tāngata whaiora
  • Liaise with core external agencies including district courts across the midland region, other Te Whatu Ora districts and Ara Poutama.

About the Team/Service

The service delivers mental health care to individuals in the prison, community and court settings within the Midland Region. The team covers Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki regions.

This position will be based in Tauranga with travel to Whakatane & Opotiki Courts and may require additional support to forensic court liaison in Waikato and Taranaki regions.

About you

  • Competency with te ao Māori, tikanga, and te reo Māori or a commitment to starting your journey and taking ownership of your learning and growth.
  • Experience in upholding Te Tiriti principals and frameworks, and the application of Mātauranga Māori and Kaupapa Māori approaches, particularly as they apply in healthcare settings.
  • Highly developed interpersonal communication and negotiation skills including demonstrated ability to build productive working relationships with colleagues to achieve required outcomes.
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of New Zaland and a current annual practicing certificate which enables you to work in mental health.
  • A current full NZ drivers licence.
