About the Role

This highly regarded Provisional Fellow position within the Department of Anaesthesia at Christchurch Hospital offers an exceptional opportunity to consolidate your specialist training in a large tertiary centre.

As a Provisional Fellow, you will provide comprehensive anaesthesia services across elective and acute settings, including:

  • Anaesthesia for surgical and procedural lists
  • Acute and after-hours anaesthesia services
  • Obstetric anaesthesia
  • Acute Pain Management Service
  • Pre-admission clinic assessments
  • Supervision of anaesthetic registrars and SHOs

You will participate in a structured 5-week rotating roster (average 46.28 hours per week), incorporating elective lists, evening acute sessions, non-clinical time, teaching, and weekend/public holiday service requirements.

This role offers significant exposure to complex tertiary caseloads, the opportunity to work closely with specialist anaesthetists in agreed areas of interest, and active involvement in teaching, quality improvement, and biomedical research.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Department of Anaesthesia at Christchurch Hospital is one of the largest and busiest in Aotearoa New Zealand, delivering services across multiple anaesthetising locations. The team provides elective and acute care, obstetric services, and a comprehensive Acute Pain Management Service, with strong links to the University of Otago and the Christchurch School of Medicine.

About You

As a Provisional Fellow in Anaesthesia, you will bring:

  • FANZCA Part Two (or equivalent recognised qualification)
  • Completion of ANZCA requirements to commence a Provisional Fellowship year (or minimum four years' equivalent registrar-level training for non-ANZCA trainees)
  • Current Annual Practising Certificate and Medical Indemnity Insurance
  • Ability to manage a high-acuity workload and prioritise effectively
  • A collaborative, team-focused approach with excellent communication skills
  • Commitment to teaching, clinical excellence, and ongoing professional development

You will demonstrate empathy, professionalism, adaptability, and a strong commitment to patient-centred care.
