About the Role

We are looking for a motivated clinician to provide effective and high-quality anaesthetic services to the Northland community. Ideally you will bring an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Tikanga Māori, knowledge of Te Reo Māori is also valued. You should be a confident communicator and be willing to participate in teaching resident medical staff, nurses and anaesthetic technicians. You will also be involved in supervision of introductory trainees out of hours on a 1:9 basis, helping them to transition to the registrar after-hours roster. There is an option to participate in the SMO on-call roster from time to time, with SMO back-up.

We have a General Provisional Fellow job approved by The Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). The clinical focus of this position will be shaped by the interests of the successful applicant.

Options include:

• Perioperative medicine. Whangārei is a clinical immersion site for the ANZCA chapter in Perioperative Medicine. We can offer regular ECHO clinics and high-risk anaesthetic clinics. We have several current graduates of the Chapter of Perioperative Medicine to supervise you if you wish to undertake the ANZCA Course in Perioperative Medicine during your PF time.
• Regional anaesthesia. We currently provide monthly half-day teaching in regional anaesthesia, which you could attend and then assist with. We can provide regular regional anaesthesia lists, and an opportunity to assist in teaching on our yearly Northland Regional Anaesthesia Workshop (NRAW).
• We are committed to growing the capacity and capability of the Māori workforce to a level that reflects the population that it serves, and as such Māori applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. We would be supportive of allocating clinical support time to Kaupapa Māori research to develop the cultural safety of our service.
• Medical Education and Quality Assurance. We have medical students, SHOs and junior registrars within our department. We have the capabilities to run regular simulation, if this is an area of interest for you. It is expected that the Provisional Fellow contribute to departmental QA activities, and they are encouraged to be involved in developing guidelines and patient pathways.

About the Location

Our Anaesthetic Department provides a 24 hour, 7 days per week service to Whangārei Hospital as well as oversight to one of our rural centres, Kaitaia Hospital. We have a strong Perioperative Medicine department with specialist anaesthetic echocardiography, bariatric, and high-risk clinics. Our workload includes a large proportion of paediatric work, as well as trauma, major general and ENT procedures, obstetrics, and spinal surgery. Kaitaia Hospital has been approved as a satellite training site where you could complete up to 10% of your time and experience working in a rural anaesthesia environment.

As well as a warm climate, the "winterless north" offers excellent schools; affordable housing and scenic coastal areas offering a range of recreational activities. We are just a two hours' drive or 25-minute flight from the international hub of Auckland.

About you

To be considered, you must have or be eligible for General or Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ). You must be an ANZCA trainee eligible to enter your provisional fellowship year or hold the qualification of FANZCA/overseas equivalent.
