 We are Te Whatu Ora-Auckland. We are part of Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, the overarching organisation for New Zealands national health service. We provide health and disability services to more than half a million people living in central Auckland, regional services for Northland and greater Auckland, and specialist national services for the whole of New Zealand. Our main sites are Auckland City Hospital, Greenlane Clinical Centre and Starship Childrens Hospital, located in central Auckland.

About the Role

 Starship Childrens Health (Auckland), the leading provider of child health care in New Zealand and the South Pacific, has an exciting opportunity for a 12 months fixed term, full-time unaccredited Pain Fellowship position commencing from 2027

 In this role, you will advocate for, and manage acute, persistent, procedural and cancer pain in children and adolescents. There is an expectation that the Fellow will be involved in audit and other departmental activities. On-Call duties will vary depending on the candidate and the base specialty they belong to. Job sharing and flexible working arrangements for these positions are negotiable. As part of the application, applicants should advise what base specialty they belong to and their on-call requirements in their specialty.

 About the Team

The Department of Paediatric Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine is responsible for the management of approximately 11,000 cases per year through 7 operating rooms at Starship Childrens Hospital plus additional operating room sessions at a separate day surgery facility, Greenlane Surgical Unit (GSU). A further 1,500 patients are anaesthetised for procedures outside the Operating Rooms which include MRI, CT,

Cardiac Investigations, radiotherapy and other radiology procedures at various locations at Starship Childrens hospital and Auckland City Hospital.

 A successful applicant would join a team of 25 Consultants, 4 Fellows and 7 Registrars at the leading provider of tertiary paediatric care for New Zealand and the South Pacific. Our team incorporates a dedicated Acute and Chronic Pain service and includes subspecialty teams for Cardiac and Transplantation Anaesthesia. In addition, we provide secondary level paediatric care for our local population.

About you

To be successful, you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand or eligible for such registration (General Registration). Applicants must be eligible to work in New Zealand. Preference will be given to New Zealand Citizens and New Zealand residents as per New Zealand employment requirements, though overseas candidates are welcome to apply.

Other requirements for the role include:

• FPM-ANZCA(or equivalent). Consideration will be given to applicants developing an interest in pain medicine as part of their base speciality including but not limited to paediatric medicine, anaesthesia, and psychiatry.
• You should be either nearing the end of your training, or ideally, have recently completed a formal training programme or near the end of training program, but seeking additional structured training in Paediatric Pain Medicine or have an Fellowship equivalent to anaesthetic FANZCA.
