Statistical Production Lead | Kaihautū Hanga Tatauranga at Statistics NZ, Wellington
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
If you’re someone who thrives on bringing structure to complex delivery, enjoys working alongside highly skilled analysts and advisors, and takes pride in getting important work across the line — this could be a genuinely rewarding next step.
Stats NZ is looking for a Statistical Production Lead to play a pivotal role in supporting the delivery of high‑quality, nationally significant statistical releases. This is a role for someone who enjoys being at the centre of delivery — connecting people, plans, and priorities to ensure releases land on time and with confidence.
You’ll bring calm, clarity, and momentum to release delivery, while building trusted relationships across analytical, advisory, and leadership roles. While requirements may shift as organisational needs evolve, the essence of this role remains constant: supporting teams to deliver well, together, and on time.
Mō te tūnga | About the role
This is a delivery‑focused leadership role, responsible for the end‑to‑end coordination of one or more statistical releases. While you won’t necessarily be the technical expert in every domain, you will be the go‑to expert on how releases get delivered — guiding teams through processes, milestones, and dependencies with confidence and pragmatism.
You’ll work closely with the Unit Manager as a senior member of the team, helping translate priorities into clear delivery plans and ensuring work is well sequenced, supervised, and supported. Together, you’ll maintain a transparent view of progress, risks, and decisions — creating the conditions for teams to focus on producing high‑quality outputs.
Day to day, you’ll:
- plan and manage release timelines and milestones
- coordinate tasks, dependencies, and delivery risks across contributors
- provide clear, regular status updates to leadership and stakeholders
- step in early when things start to drift, and help teams find practical solutions
You’ll also work closely with other Statistical Production Leads to ensure consistency across releases — aligning approaches, sharing lessons learned, and strengthening how statistical production operates as a system, not just a set of individual projects.
A key part of this role is relationships. You’ll build strong, credible partnerships with Analysts, Advisors, and technical specialists — becoming a trusted voice who understands both delivery discipline and the realities of analytical work. Your ability to listen, influence, and create shared understanding will be just as important as your planning skills.
Beyond individual releases, there is real opportunity to shape and improve how work is done. You’ll contribute to the development of tools, processes, and methodologies that can scale, be reused, and support future statistical products. You’ll coach others to understand the bigger picture their work sits within and help lift delivery capability across the organisation.
Ngā pūmanawatanga ōu | What you will bring
You’re someone who combines delivery discipline with approachability. You’re comfortable holding timelines and standards — and you do it in a way that builds trust rather than friction.
You will bring:
- Demonstrated experience working on statistical releases or statistical production and a deep understanding of release and production processes
- Proven experience coordinating or managing delivery in complex environments
- Strong organisational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple moving parts
- Confidence working with technical specialists and guiding work without needing to be the subject matter expert
- Clear communication skills, including providing concise and meaningful status updates
- A mindset of continuous improvement — curious, reflective, and keen to make things better
Experience in statistical, data, or analytical production environments is an advantage, but what matters most is your ability to create clarity, keep work moving, and support others to deliver their best.
Above all, you bring steadiness, follow‑through, and a genuine commitment to shared success.
