About Us

The Consult Liaison and Emergency Department (ED) Psychiatry team is a dedicated group of Psychiatrists and Nurses who work with Tāngata whai I te ora (those seeking wellness) admitted to the hospitals' Emergency Departments, Assessment & Diagnostic Units (ADU), and those in wards who are affected by mental health issues and concurrent physical health issues. The Liaison Psychiatry team will conduct assessments and provide advise on treatment and appropriate follow-up care for the patients with mental health concerns. This team is an integral part of the wider Specialised Mental Health and Addictions division.

We are seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist who demonstrates excellence in clinical practice, a strong commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to providing culturally responsive clinical care for Tāngata whai i te ora and their whānau. 

Working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist within a Liaison Psychiatry and Emergency Department mental health team opens the door to a dynamic, fastpaced, and deeply meaningful career. The role offers the chance to be at the frontline of mental health care, where every day brings new clinical challenges and opportunities to make a tangible difference for people in crisis. Youre constantly expanding your expertise through complex assessments, rapid decisionmaking, and close collaboration with ED clinicians, psychiatrists, social workers, and community teams. Beyond the clinical work, the position encourages leadership, service development, and the ability to influence how mental health care is delivered across acute settingsmaking it a role thats as professionally rewarding as it is impactful.

This is a pivotal role that requires critical thinking, advanced nursing expertise and evidence-based practice to lead practice within our multidisciplinary team. As part of this, you will provide leadership and oversight to other nurses. You will champion high standards of care for individuals presenting with complex mental health and physical health needs across all age groups, including adults, rangatahi (youth), and kaumātua (older adults).

The Clinical Nurse Specialist role involves autonomous practice and will support diverse and at times challenging presentations including intoxication in the emergency department and hospital wards. You will actively lead complex care planning and multi-agency care planning in collaboration with whānau, community agencies and other health professionals. At a local and national level, you will develop and influence policy.

You will be responsible for ongoing education to staff from other specialties to support ongoing improvement in practice, understanding and capability when caring for those with mental health and addiction needs. A core aspect of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role within this service is the promotion of a positive culture of respect and partnership which is grounded in mannakitanga, whanaungatanga and kotahitanga.

About You

We are looking to recruit a Clinical Nurse Specialist/ Registered Nurse with:

  • Registered Nurse with current APC with scope to work in Mental Health
  • Post-graduate diploma in Mental Health
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Clinical practice within Mental Health
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proven commitment to professional standards, quality improvement and clinical supervision
  • Collaborative teamwork skills
