Our Acute Response Team is seeking a Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to provide specialist care, expertise and clinical leadership in advanced assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of people experiencing an episode of acute mental distress.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for the Southern Lakes service to promote growth and development of nursing leadership roles in our region.

  • To facilitate the delivery of effective clinical services ensuring quality care and a safe journey across the care continuum for consumers/tāngata whaiora
  • To provide nursing care based on current best practice and collaborative working within the interdisciplinary team.
  • Provides specialist care, expertise and clinical leadership that includes advanced assessment, planning, nursing interventions and evaluation through patient contacts. Provides advice on complex clinical issues.
  • The CNS role provides professional leadership that guides and supports nursing staff to provide culturally safe and evidence informed treatment for tāngata whaiora experiencing an episode of acute mental distress.
  • The CNS will work in a consultative manner by collaboration with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and other health professionals (including Primary Care clinicians) to initiate and guide quality improvement activities and changes in the practice setting.
  • The CNS will mentor and support nursing staff and provide advice regarding complex patients. In addition, the CNS will participate in regular meetings with the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM) and Clinical Nurse Educator (CE) to identify further clinical issues for CNS input.
  • Performance measures for all nurses fall in to two parts, the first part being compliance with the following Health New Zealand|Te Whatu Ora Lakes generic core competencies and the second part being achievement of the specific requirements of the job description.
  • The CNS role is framed by both clinical expertise and academic preparation. The CNS contributes to the mental health nursing knowledge and skills in the assessment of health needs, planning and nursing care delivery in the context of a therapeutic relationship. The CNS in the Acute Response team is responsible for leading and contributing to the development of standards and processes that support the delivery of quality care for people experiencing a mental health crisis.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients and the public.
  • Works to and models the lakes Model of care, Te Ara Tauwhirotanga - Pathways that lead us to act with kindness to provide the optimal environment and service to effect clients wellness and recovery.

Southern Lakes Community Mental Health Services is based on the Taupo Hospital site and consists of other community mental health services:

  • Acute Response team
  • General adult community mental health
  • Perinatal mental health
  • Infant child adolescent mental health (iCAMHS) and
  • Older persons mental health services

About you

You should have the following professional requirements needed for the role:

  • Registration as a Psychiatric Nurse or Comprehensive Nurse holding a current Practicing Certificate
  • Post Graduate Certificate or Diploma in Mental Health Nursing, or have evidence of an on-going commitment to continuing education
  • 5 years Post Registration with relevant Mental Health Nursing experience
  • Sound acute assessment skills and the ability to make decisions quickly with patient, staff with the client at the forefront of all decisions made
  • Experience in the use of recognised therapeutic models and intervention strategies
  • Expert level competence in risk assessment and formulation of risk
  • Current drivers license
  • Excellent skills for communicating with service users, family/whanau, team members and other agencies
  • The ability to work autonomously while embracing a team approach
