Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role 

The Analytics, Insights & Modelling (AIM) team is a centre of excellence for analytics and modelling across the Treasury. We work closely with policy teams and IT partners to ensure high‑quality evidence and robust, usable modelling are embedded in advice and delivery. The AIM team is part of the Economic Strategy Division, who deliver actionable advice on how to improve the productivity, resilience, and broader performance of the New Zealand economy. 

We’re seeking a Principal Advisor to provide Treasury‑wide leadership on the effective, sustainable use of modelling and analytics, working in close partnership with both policy and IT teams. About AIM 

AIM is a high‑performing, collegial team that values collaboration, curiosity, and practical impact. We partner with teams across the Treasury and other agencies on New Zealand’s most complex economic and fiscal issues. Our work spans microsimulation modelling and microdata analysis, macroeconomic and fiscal modelling, statistical and empirical analysis, and CGE modelling. 

About the role 

The Principal Advisor role offers a unique opportunity to work across organisational boundaries, collaborating closely with policy teams and IT/digital experts to shape the Treasury’s strategic direction in analytics and modelling. 

You will combine deep technical expertise with strategic leadership, contributing to improved systems, governance, and delivery approaches that strengthen how modelling and analytics support Treasury advice. 

What you’ll do (typical work): 

  • Lead Treasury‑wide initiatives to enhance the effective use of modelling and analytics in high‑quality advice.  
  • Provide system‑level leadership across:  
  • Governance of models and analytics 
  • Integration of modelling with Treasury’s digital strategy and tools 
  • Improving the implementation, usability, and operational sustainability of models for policy teams 
  • Supporting the safe and practical adoption of emerging technologies, including AI, in partnership with digital and security specialists 
  • Building capability and fostering networks across the Treasury and wider government 
  • Lead and contribute to modelling projects across the AIM suite, with a focus aligned to your expertise.

To succeed in this role, you will have: 

  • Substantial experience applying advanced analytical or modelling expertise to complex policy or business issues. 
  • Significant and recognised intellectual capability. 
  • Well-developed written communication skills. 
  • A reputation for being at the top of your game or nationally recognised in your field. 
  • A strong ability and enthusiasm to link your discipline and skills to Treasury’s evolving priorities. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships and influence across diverse stakeholders 
  • An understanding of the government environment and the need to balance technical rigour with broader considerations when advising Ministers 
  • Effective planning and organisational skills in a results‑focused environment. 
  • Advanced tertiary qualification. 
  • Show an awareness of, and a commitment to, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
