Emergency Medicine Registrar - 2027 Training Year at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Te Matau a Māui Hawke's Bay, Hawkes Bay

About the Role

We are seeking an Emergency Medicine (ED) Registrar to join our Emergency Department here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The 2027 training year commences on 1 February, and mid-year starts on 2 August.

Our department is accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) as a Tier 2 (non-major referral) training site, offering 24 months of accredited ED training. You will be supported by a structured teaching programme with strong educational supervision and plentiful handson learning opportunities to support your development in Emergency Medicine. Registrars who are not enrolled in a formal training programme will also gain valuable, assessable skills and broad emergency medicine experience.

About the Team/Service/ Location

You will join a wellestablished and supportive multidisciplinary team comprising 16 Emergency Medicine Physicians, 1 Medical Officer, 15 Registrars, 8 House Officers, and 4 Nurse Practitioners.

The Emergency Department handles over 50,000 presentations per year, with an admission rate of around 30%. Patient acuity is high, with a significant volume of major trauma and complex emergency cases. The department also operates four Observation Unit beds, providing care for a wide range of conditions. Registrars are offered extensive opportunities to perform procedures, manage highacuity cases, and take a lead role in resuscitations, ensuring excellent exposure and professional growth within a busy regional emergency service.

Health NZ - Hawkes Bay provides healthcare services to a population of approximately 180,000 people across the region. Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital is the principal acute hospital and specialist service provider, supported by smaller satellite facilities in Central Hawkes Bay, Napier, and Wairoa.

Located in Hastings, Hawkes Bay Hospital is a 400 bed secondary level public hospital delivering both acute and elective care across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics and obstetrics & gynaecology. We are supported by a strong regional ICU and flight team with tertiary support for cardiac intervention, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics and neurosurgery from Wellington, ensuring comprehensive care.

About you

  • Youre a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) PGY3 or above, ideally with at least 6 months of experience working in an Emergency Department at a Registrar level
  • You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
