Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Whangārei Hospital
Fulltime Permanent
Commencing February 2027

Achieving the best health outcomes for our patients starts with expecting the best from ourselves, and right now Health New Zealand is looking for an exceptional Medical Registrar trainee to join our accredited basic and advanced physician training programme at Whangarei Hospital. We are accredited for six months of advanced training in Geriatric Medicine and 12 months advanced training in General Medicine as well as two years of basic medical training.

Weve made Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora Northland District much more than just a place to come to work. Every day brings opportunities to leave things better than you found them. With each opportunity, youre trusted to try new things and achieve the best outcomes for your patients. You can make an impact on your community and on your own professional development all whilst enjoying a flexible and healthy work-life balance.

Health New Zealand is committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and holds stewardship for equitable health outcomes for Māori as Tāngata Whenua as the highest priority.

About the Role

The Department of Health of Older People provides a range of services including acute care of the elderly, acute stroke care, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient and community services. Northland has one of the highest rates of acute stroke in the country and we have a ten bed Acute Stroke Unit.

As a Medical Registrar you will focus on the assessment and management of patients of all ages presenting with acute stroke and TIA. Working closely with your Consultant will allow you to grow your skills and widen your practice as your skills grow. You will have an opportunity to learn about initial assessment and management including selection for thrombolysis and clot retrieval, and to attend a neurology clinic once a week. You will participate in the acute medicine on-call roster work with opportunity to expand experience in other specialties such as Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Nephrology, Oncology, Respiratory and Gastroenterology.

We provide close supervision for trainees in inpatient, community and outpatient settings, allied with a commitment to teaching. Hosting medical students from Auckland University will allow you to practice and improve your own teaching skills via an active clinical training programme with didactic sessions, interactive based teaching, journal club and videoconferencing of RACP lectures. There is the opportunity to participate in the Northern Regional Geriatric Medicine Journal Club in Auckland.
