Strategy Advisor at Government Communications Security Bureau, Wellington
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
We’re looking for a Strategy Advisor thinker to make a meaningful impact on the cyber safety of New Zealand. You will play a key role in shaping how New Zealand manages cyber security risks – from helping individual New Zealanders and small organisations through to critical infrastructure operators and the New Zealand Government’s most sensitive information.
The NCSC:
As New Zealand’s lead operational cyber security agency, the NCSC makes it for everyone in New Zealand to play their part in keeping New Zealand cyber resilient. The NCSC supports this collective effort in three main ways:
- We support everyone in New Zealand to act on informed decisions.
- We work with key players to build good cyber security basics into New Zealand’s cyber security ecosystem.
- We use our mandate, relationships and specialist capabilities to counter the most serious harms.
The roles
As a member of the NCSC’s Strategy and Advice team, you’ll help to answer tricky strategic questions about how we best raise the cyber security of New Zealanders, how we measure our performance and where we prioritise our efforts.
Day to day, you’ll work on a mix of complex strategic projects, take the lead preparing advice for leaders on decisions with interagency or cross-NCSC implications, help report to the NCSC Executive team and external stakeholders on NCSC’s performance, ensure that NCSC’s work is connected to work being done elsewhere across the New Zealand Government, and keep our Minister informed about major cyber security incidents.
What you’ll bring:
- Experience in a similar role with another complex New Zealand public sector organisation or equivalent, providing strategic or policy analysis and advice.
- Experience building relationships and influencing stakeholders, internally and externally.
- Demonstrated ability to develop independent judgment across a range of areas, including on complex projects or where political risk exists.
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex issues clearly and tailor your communication to meet audience needs.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the interest and ability to foster good stakeholder relationships through consultation and partnership.
Why join NCSC?
- Direct impact – Support the team that safeguards the nation’s cyber environment.
- Professional growth – Access training and pathways into cyber‑security and government operations.
- Supportive culture – Collaborative, inclusive environment with flexible working hours.
The appointment range for the Strategy Advisor role will be between $87,048 and $92,851
