Mō te tūranga mahi – about the role
As the Technical Team Leader, you will be the go‑to technology champion for Technology and Data, working side‑by‑side with the Unit Manager to keep the GCSB, NZSIS, wider NZIC and our international partners connected on a secure, reliable network.
You will design and roll out the next generation of network solutions, plan their life‑cycle, and steer day‑to‑day operations—from incident response and problem solving to change management and preventive maintenance—ensuring the network stays robust and future‑proof.
In this hands‑on leadership role, you will guide and mentor a talented team of network engineers, make key operational decisions, and champion best‑practice engineering standards across the directorate. By bringing your deep network expertise to the table, you will work closely with stakeholders to translate technical possibilities into real‑world benefits, driving standardisation, automation, innovation and seamless connectivity throughout the intelligence community. Real world experience in NetDevOps both advantageous and desirable.

You will be a network specialist who loves turning complex challenges into reliable, secure solutions while inspiring and guiding a high‑performing technical team. What you will bring:
- Deep IT expertise – a solid background in network engineering and a track record of delivering resilient, secure networks that follow industry best practice.
- Leadership chops – proven experience managing, motivating and developing technical teams to exceed expectations.
- Customer‑focused mindset – strong communication skills and a knack for cultivating productive relationships with internal and external partners.
- Strategic delivery – ability to plan and execute tactical and strategic work programmes, solve complex problems, and drive continuous improvement.
- Relevant credentials – Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related field plus a recognised networking certification (e.g., CCNP, JNCIP).
The expected appointing range for this position is between $142,093 - $151,566 per annum.

Before you apply
Working within our unique environment means we have to ensure you're eligible for employment.
You must:
- Have been a New Zealand Citizen for at least 10 years
OR
Hold a current NZ Residency Class Visa and ideally have been a citizen of the UK, USA, Canada or Australia for at least 10 years
- Be eligible to obtain a Top Secret Special (TSS) security clearance
- Ordinarily, this means you'll have a 15 year checkable background in countries NZSIS Vetting can make meaningful and reliable checks.
