Director of Psychiatry at Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley, Wellington Hospital

About the role

The Mental Health, Addiction & Intellectual Disability Service (MHAIDS) is seeking an experienced, collaborative and forward-thinking senior psychiatrist for the role of Director of Psychiatry.

This is a significant medical leadership position within one of New Zealand's largest and most diverse specialist mental health and addiction services, spanning local, regional and national services across the lower North Island.

As Director of Psychiatry, you will be a key member of the MHAIDS Senior Leadership Team, providing strategic and professional leadership to the medical workforce while contributing to the ongoing development, quality and sustainability of mental health and addiction services across the region.

The role provides visible and effective professional leadership for the psychiatry workforce across MHAIDS, supporting high standards of clinical practice, workforce wellbeing, training, recruitment, service development and continuous improvement.

You will work closely with clinical, operational and professional leaders across nursing, allied health and cultural workforces to support safe, effective and equitable care for tāngata whaiora and whānau.

About the Team/Service/ Location

MHAIDS employs more than 1,700 staff and delivers a broad range of specialist services across Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley and Wairarapa districts. Services include community, inpatient, forensic, rehabilitation, addiction and intellectual disability services, alongside regional and national specialist functions.

The role is primarily based in Porirua, with regular engagement across multiple sites and services throughout the district.

MHAIDS is committed to improving equity and outcomes for Māori, Pacific peoples and other communities experiencing inequitable access and outcomes, and to working in partnership with tāngata whaiora, whānau and communities.

About you

You will be an experienced senior psychiatrist with credibility as a clinical leader and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across complex systems and multidisciplinary environments.

You will bring:

  • Significant medical leadership experience within complex health environments
  • Strong strategic, operational and relationship leadership capability
  • Experience supporting workforce development, organisational change and service improvement
  • A collaborative and values-based leadership style
  • Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, equity and culturally responsive practice
  • Vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in Psychiatry
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP), or equivalent recognised specialist qualification
