About the Role

This is a newly funded role working alongside an AOD Clinician in the Adult Emergency Department (AED) at Auckland City Hospital, one of seven national pilot sites for implementing screening, brief and early intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) for patients with alcohol and other drug problems. You will also be a resource for the AED staff by providing information and education on substance use, motivational interviewing, brief intervention and harm reduction where required or requested. 

About the Team/Service/ Location

You will report to the Clinical Team Leader, Liaison Psychiatry and the majority of your work will be in the AED. We will provide you with a laptop and although the role is stand alone, you will have access to support from the Mental Health Nurse Educator and the Liaison Psychiatry team. We will also support you to access appropriate supervision in your specialist area of practice.

About you

You will be a registered nurse with a current practicing certificate and be DAPAANZ registered.

You will bring an understanding of SBIRT and some experience in screening and brief intervention for alcohol and other drugs and be skilled in brief psychological/ talking therapies for substance misuse. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to engage positively with patients in often stressful environment.

Skills in identifying higher risk presentations particularly around potential for withdrawal management are highly desirable.

You will have good knowledge of AOD, mental health, social and community services in Auckland District and demonstrate an understanding of health promotion and harm reduction.

You will need to be able to work autonomously in a high-pressure environment alongside other clinicians whilst building good collegial relationships.

Remuneration will be as per the Mental Health & Public Health Nursing (PSA) MECA.
