About the Role

We are seeking a Surgical Registrar to join our Surgical Department here at Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldiers Memorial Hospital to commence from September 2026.

The Registrars are responsible for the day to day management of inpatients under the care of a designated Consultant. They are also responsible for the assessment and treatment of patients referred to hospital acutely with surgical problems. These may be patients referred for admissions on acute days or be patients who have previously been cared for by the team and whom the team as accepted for re-admission. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Our service is fully accredited for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Surgical Education and Training (SET) programme, offering a robust platform towards your professional development.

About the Team/Service/ Location

The successful candidate would join a team of 13 Registrars with the full support of 9 General Surgeons, 3 Urologists and work closely with 8 House Officers.

Hawkes Bay Hospital is a 400-bed secondary level public hospital in Hastings, serving a population of over 180,000 people. We offer both acute and elective care across a wide range of medical and surgical specialties, including paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and more. We are supported by a strong regional ICU and flight team with tertiary support for cardiac intervention, cardiothoracic surgery, plastics and neurosurgery from Wellington, ensuring comprehensive care for a diverse patient population.

About you

  • Youre a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) PGY3 or above
  • Youve ideally completed a placement within Surgery at Registrar level
  • You are registered or eligible for general registration, with the Medical Council of New Zealand
