About the Role

As a Peer Support Worker, you will draw on your own lived experience of recovery to provide meaningful, strengths-based support to people engaged with the Te Ara Manapou service. Your day-to-day work will involve building trusted, respectful relationships with consumers, supporting them one-on-one or in group settings, and helping them reconnect with their whānau, community, and sense of purpose.

You will walk alongside individuals as they build confidence, develop self-advocacy, and identify goals that matter to them. Rather than fixing challenges, you will empower others to recognise their own capabilities and resilience, supporting sustainable recovery outcomes. Working closely within a multidisciplinary team, youll contribute a unique peer perspective that promotes hope, inclusion and wellbeing.

About the Team/Service/ Location

Our Te Ara Manapou Pregnancy & Parenting Support team provides specialist support for parents and whānau navigating recovery, with a strong focus on wellbeing, connection, and community participation. Based in the community but under Hawkes Bay Fallen Soldier Memorial Hospital, you will join a collaborative, values-driven service committed to culturally responsive care and equitable health outcomes.

About you

As a Peer Support Worker, you will bring both lived experience and a passion for supporting others on their recovery journey, alongside:

  • Personal lived experience of alcohol and other drug recovery, with a minimum of two years being substance free
  • Experience or training in peer support or a related field
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with diverse communities
  • Understanding of recovery-focused, strengths-based approaches and relevant health legislation
  •  Commitment to culturally safe practice and the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
