About the Role

As a Health Care Assistant, you will working under the direction and delegation of Nursing and Midwifery, the Health Care Assistant role contributes to supporting safe patient/tūroro/tangata whai ora care for patients/tūroro/tangata whai ora and whānau by assisting with delegated activities and supporting the maintenance of a safe, pleasant, functional environment as part of the healthcare delivery team.

This role will be based in the JCCC / Te Hihiri Whakahauora buildings where you will primarily meet and greet patients/tūroro/tangata whai ora and their families or representatives and answers phone enquires and refers calls of a clinical nature to the appropriate health professional. This includes assisting in the daily functioning of the designated department to ensure its smooth running such as housekeeping duties, restocking and some reception/administrative tasks as specified.

About the Team/Service/Location

The Cancer & Blood Service at Whangārei Hospital provides specialist cancer and blood disorder care for people across Te Tai Tokerau. Based at the Jim Carney Cancer Centre, our service delivers Medical Oncology, Haematology, Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment, specialist nursing, and a broad range of allied health and supportive care services. Working alongside primary care, community providers, and regional cancer services, we provide coordinated, person-centred care from diagnosis through treatment and beyond.

A significant milestone in our service expansion is the opening of Te Hihiri Whakahauora, Northland's new purpose-built Radiation Oncology Unit, located alongside the Jim Carney Cancer Centre. This facility brings radiation therapy to Te Tai Tokerau for the first time, allowing many patients to receive treatment closer to home and reducing the need to travel outside the region. It represents a major investment in cancer care for Northland and strengthens our ability to provide comprehensive, integrated cancer services locally.

About you

As a Health Care Assistant, you will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, great attention to detail and be able to work well in stressful situations and environments.

In addition, you must have:

• At least 3 years secondary schooling
• Proficiency in reading, speaking and writing English
• Basic computer skills
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the role
• Demonstrate an understanding of the articles and principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including how to apply the principles in a meaningful way in your role
• Demonstrate alignment with Te Whatu Ora New Zealand Te Tai Tokerau values

Whilst not essential, the below is desired:

• Intermediate/Advanced computer skills
• Customer service experience
• Experience working in a healthcare setting
• Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) with a focus on Health assistance or be working towards this qualification through Te Tai Tokerau Health Care Assistant Development Programme
