Make a difference
Our people and the services they provide make a real difference to the quality of New Zealanders lives.
The range of occupations on offer in the State sector provides many opportunities for committed people to excel and innovate and find fulfilment through challenging work, for example, through helping to protect New Zealands world-renowned environment, assisting new immigrants or families in need, developing a new education curriculum for the next generation, representing our country in the diplomatic service, or working in search and rescue, scientific research or commercial enterprise

A career in the Public Service offers the excitement of being at the centre of the action, having a wide sphere of influence and getting the satisfaction of being rewarded for doing good and interesting work. Promotion is on merit, not on length of service.
Shape our future
A special role of the State sector is providing advice to Government on policy matters.
It is a unique area of work in researching, debating and recommending options for action to your Minister, you will be helping to help translate the Governments vision into practice. This allows you to be at the cutting edge of change, and provides opportunities for contact with the leaders of our society, and to see the machinery of Government at work.
You can enter the policy area from a wide range of backgrounds - generalists and specialists are both required, and life experience is always taken into account.
If youre already working in the State sector, a secondment may provide an opportunity to gain experience in a policy role or to work in a role where policy is being implemented.
